Joy Luck Club

objective:

We had to watch the film, The Joy Luck Club, and write another 3 page reflection on the same old: cinematography, script, acting, and directing.

artifact:

reflection:

I enjoyed this film and felt a sort of connection to it. Seeing the women bonding together over food and mahjong while telling their stories, the drama, and mother-daughter relationships was like seeing my own family in a way. Except for all of that DRAMA.

objective:

This week we were supposed to make a kid-friendly video so we chose zombie dropouts. Yes, we used zombies as a metaphor to describe high school dropouts.

script:

Zombie Dropouts

reflection:

All I have to say is, we seriously need to make use of our tripods. I do better as a director. And this is what happens when you watch too many zombie films.

Objective:

Here’s a fun one, make a music video. What’s better than the good ol’ Beatles? The video starts off with Javier going into a room and getting a sense of deja vu. Cut back to a different time where they’re out partying to twist and shout until Michael comes in at the end and interrupts him by bringing him back to present-day.

Reflection:

I guess I know what I don’t want to be: a cinematographer. I would have gone the whole nine yards with costume and choreo. However, I am proud of what I got done by the deadline. At least I had something to work with.

Non, Je Ne Regrette Nien

Objective:

Here is another assignment that we must do with every film we watch. As per usual, focus on lighting, camera angles, acting, script, and editing. Then write a reflection. The film is called La Vie En Rose, in which Marion Cotillard portrays the French singer, Edith Piaf.

Artifact:

La Vie En Rose

Reflection:

I found Edith Piaf’s music interesting after hearing Non, Je Ne Regrette Nien a few years back and my interest in her as a person increased after I saw this film. Cotillard’s performance was captivating and powerful as a young and old Edith. I learned new techniques in getting a more creative shot and learned how lighting affects mood.

Objective:

Last year, I was the given the task of working with a group on a Claymation that represented AME academy. We built the characters and painted the sets. Armed and ready with a camera, we did the tedious task of taking a shot, then moving the characters an inch, then followed it with another shot. This repeats about 100 more times.

Artifact:

Reflection:

The result was an unfinished piece of work that i a still proud of. Making this claymation was fun and looking back at this, I learned that i had to speed it up so it could flow and to use photoshop to take off the unwanted strings, pen and clay.

Sin City illusions)

Objective:

I was instructed to write a 10 page script limited to a bus stop. My friends and I always wanted to go on a road trip to Vegas when we hit 18, so i guess this inspired me to create a scenario of some crazy things we wouldn’t go through. It was all for good fun. The catch was that the entire scene had to take place at a bus stop.

Script:

Sin City Temptations

Reflection:

Writing a 10 page script seemed to fit the entire storyline. The script basically shows that even though we are tempted to stray from the group, we learn to stick together. And those are my buddies for you.

Raging Bull(1980) Reflection

Objective:

We were shown the film, Raging Bull directed by Martin Scorcese. We took notes of lighting, directing, acting, and etc. Then we were to write a reflection on the film.

Reflection:

This was the first time I ever saw this film with a younger Robert De Niro. The range of shots, acting, and directing helped me see an example of a well put together film.
